Calling all experienced potty trainers

HELP??!!! Calling all experienced moms (and dads, too) out there who have some experience with potty training boys...I desperately need your wise counsel and advice! Little man just does not seem interested in taking care of business on the potty....particularly when it comes to doing a #2. To say I am stressed about this would be an understatement. I have tried doing the technique of setting the timer every hour and having him sit on the potty at each interval, but he usually has already tinkled in the diaper and/or he'll just sit on the potty and play with the toilet paper or better yet, he is more than intrigued with, let's see how can I say this, his male counterpart! What do I do? Should I just stick him in regular underwear already and let him wet himself and see if it grosses him out enough to stop doing it?

Please, please leave me some helpful tips and advice of what has worked for you and your child in the comment section below..I would be most grateful!!!

  1. Okay, so I am not experienced in this area but my sister had that same problem with her lil boy too! So one weekend while my sis left her kids with Grandma and Grandpa they sat the potty right in the middle of the living room and turned on the cartoons. And it worked like a charm!

Dont feel bad about using bribes or "rewards" for using the potty. Candy always makes things better! I have a picture with me on the potty holding a half eaten cookie. And that was just last week! LOL Thanks Luke....JK JK I was like 2yrs old and bawling my head off!

    Good Luck!

  2. Oh, so familiar! One thing that helped with Evan was having him go around the house with NOTHING on his bottom half. I HATE doing that, but it helped a lot, with both #1 and #2.

With #2, if you are fortunate enough to catch him in the act and can grab him and get him on the potty, that may help. It is traumatic at first, but if he can't stop it from coming out and it HAS to go in the potty, it might be enough to make him realize that it's not so bad after all. (Does that make sense?)

Celebrating success is great, too, as you well know! Try printing out a little picture and cutting it into a few puzzle pieces. He gets one piece each time he goes and when he gets the whole puzzle done he gets something that appeals to him (keep it simple, though!). Or have a special something that he earns the first time he poops in the potty. We had a special train that Evan got to earn. Then we ended up with some little rubber cars and stuff that he earned each time afterward and for him, that clicked--you can see my post about it here: http://wonderfulwilsons.blogspot.com/2009/03/accomplishments.html

And, as I'm looking at that post, I'm realizing that Evan was even just a bit older than Noah when it finally started to click. I've known others who have their boys trained sooner, but I guess sometimes time helps, too.

Anyway, I don't know if ANYTHING I just typed makes any sense at all...but GOOD LUCK!

Oh--one more thing that I've heard works for #1 (though we never tried it)--let him stand, and throw a Cheerio or two in the water. He can aim at the Cheerios! I was never brave enough for that one... :)

    Good luck!!

  4. HaHaHa! I am so laughing! I hadn't thought about those days in a long time.

Logan is reward motivated. I did the idea of letting him pick out his underwear- he loved that. I also made a huge poster for the bathroom. Everytime he did #1 he got one sticker and #2 got 2 stickers...once he filled out a line (on the poster) - he rec'd a prize. I would also suggest the naked below the waist idea and/or the underwear. I did both...which at almost eight years old he still likes to go around naked. So BEWARE!! lol
As much as I tried to train - he really DECIDED it all on his one. One day he woke up and said, "I'm not gonna wear pull-ups anymore" - and you know what!? He didn't!
    Good Luck!
